Volunteer Leadership Covenant

Thank you for your interest in serving Christ and others at Sunnybrook Community Church. We are both grateful and excited that you have a desire to further God’s Kingdom by investing your time, talents and treasures here.

The volunteer serving role you are pursuing is entrusted with influence and authority. By assuming this role, you are agreeing to be a role model and representative of Jesus and Sunnybrook. Your ministry participation comes with a level of accountability above and beyond that of the general congregation. People pay attention to church leaders. They watch our actions and listen to our words. In addition, people often define the qualities of God and the character of our church by the choices and behaviors of their leaders, both in how we serve and how we live. We must understand the weight of responsibility this brings, and use wisdom and discernment as we navigate our personal and public lives (1 Timothy 3:1-13).

It is not Sunnybrook’s expectation that its leaders be perfect. We all fall short of God’s perfection and sometimes make mistakes. But in the spirit of honoring the influence and responsibility that comes with leadership in the local church, we ask that you read through the commitments below, along with the Scriptures that inspire them, and prayerfully reflect on the questions that follow. After reflection, please affirm your agreement by signing this covenant.

VOLUNTEER LEADER COMMITMENTS:

As a person who represents Christ and our church through my serving role(s), I commit to honor God and
reflect Him in all areas of my life.

1. I commit to lead a spiritually surrendered life.

Anyone in a role of spiritual influence at Sunnybrook should be practicing the spiritual disciplines that help grow and mature our faith (Galatians 5:16-26, John 15:4-5, Philippians 2:12-13). This includes consistently engaging with Scripture, pursuing a conversational relationship with God through prayer, and actively listening for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Another important component of a spiritually surrendered life is regular and consistent participation in the Sunnybrook community and its gatherings (Hebrews 10:25).

In what areas in your life is God calling you to greater levels of obedience and surrender?

2. I commit to display a Christ-like attitude in every interaction.

Followers of Jesus are identifiable by the love and grace they show to others. Our love must be the most prevalent attribute that others see and experience when they encounter us. For anyone in a leadership role at Sunnybrook, relationships with family and friends should be honoring and should model attributes of love (1 Corinthians 13, Philippians 2:1-11). With Christ as our example, we are servant leaders who navigate conflict in a biblical way. We long to move the work of God’s kingdom forward through humility, collaboration, and service.

In what situations do you need to engage people with a more loving, Christ-like attitude?

3. I commit to model a whole-life commitment to Sunnybrook’s vision, values and beliefs. (See Vision, Values and Beliefs document)

As part of the body of Christ at Sunnybrook, upholding the vision, values, and beliefs of the church and respecting the authority of church leadership, both male and female, is imperative. As people of influence, we should not stir up dissention and disharmony within the community. While there is room for respectful disagreement and dialogue, we must choose unity over personal preference for the greater good. Also, we must consistently pray for our church and its leadership, that we may live out God’s vision for the local church (Acts 2:42-47).

Reflect: How do you model unity within the Body, while still retaining your personal opinion?
Have you read the church’s Vision, Values, and Beliefs document and do you commit to modeling them in your life?

4. I commit to pursue a life above reproach.

While none of us are perfect or blameless, we actively pursue holiness and purity before Christ, and we regularly confess our brokenness to Him, allowing Him to transform our areas of brokenness. If you find yourself engaged in patterns of sin such as pride, greed, hatred, lust, irresponsible debt or unwholesome language, please talk with your pastor or leader, and ask him/her to walk alongside you in your journey toward overcoming these areas of brokenness. People are watching how we act and treat others. We must understand the weight of responsibility that entails and use wisdom and discernment as we navigate our personal and public lives (1 Timothy 3:1-13).

Reflect: When you consider your life in light of Scripture, is there any ongoing pattern of sin that hasn’t been confessed or surrendered?
Have you welcomed accountability from a healthy, trusted leader or peer? If not, what is your plan to do so?

5. I commit to give God my best as I serve/lead in my current role(s).

God has gifted each one of us with unique gifts and abilities (1 Corinthians 12-14). We believe that each of us should serve according to our gifts in order to bring our best to build the church. We also believe that every one of us can improve our gifts with development, training and coaching.
